Business and country planning is the process of planning all aspects of a farm operation to maximize profits and income. It is a challenging task that requires a broad range of technical, economic and human analytical and conceptual skills. The problem is that the result of any action is contingent upon conditions that cannot be predicted or guaranteed and requires flexibility in the face of uncertainty.

Farming and business management are inextricably linked. A successful farmer needs to consider both sides of the equation. They will need to be able to plan the production based upon market prices and climate conditions, while also being an effective manager of finances in planning future funding, and evaluating progress towards the goals that are set.

It is also essential that the owner has sufficient income from sources other than farm to cover operating costs and provide a margin of safety against unexpected emergencies or events. Additionally there must be adequate public facilities be made available to accommodate customers and visitors (e.g. Parking signage, education and customer support are all important.

Many ranches and farms offer an educational experience to their guests. This can include information on the production of fiber and food as well as the management of land and the history of farming. This can be a wonderful option to keep and attract customers and is typically popular with the public. It may be possible to obtain funding from a state or local agency to cover the cost of the education.
